A look at 5 of the main time management reasons why you may not be achieving your goals and what you can do to change things.
How often do you get to the end of your day at work and feel like you haven't got anything done and you feel frustrated as you are struggling to achieve your goals? You may have been very busy all day but you don't feel like you have achieved anything.
We will now look at 5 of the main time management reasons why you may not be achieving your goals in life and at work and what you can do to change things for the better:
1. Too many communication distractions. In this world of instant communication including smart phones, social media, internet, messaging and emails you may find yourself being distracted all day. To cut out these distractions you need to take control and set boundaries, for example, allocate set times each day for emails and messages, access social media and limiting private communication to outside working hours and get out of the habit of wanting to check everything instantly.
2. Being constantly interrupted. If you are constantly being interrupted your time management will be negatively impacted. This may be by phone calls or messages or your team always asking ad hoc questions. To improve the situation consider changing your environment, being more proactive through regular team meetings and one to ones and consider delegating responsibilities so everything doesn't have to come to you.
3. Unrealistic expectations. You may always feel that you don't get anything done due to unrealistic expectations of what you can do in a day. Consider what you can actually achieve each day and be realistic when writing your to do list. Having less on your list but completing it all is much more satisfying than only ever completing 10%.
4. Doing all the non urgent and unimportant things. If you spend most of your time doing all the non urgent and unimportant things you will never achieve your goals. Plan in the most important key actions for that day that are going to take you towards your goals, keep focused on these actions and delegate or outsource the other areas.
5. Ineffective or too many meetings. Do you feel like you are not getting anything done because you are always in meetings or the meetings are ineffective? Consider each proposed meeting carefully as to whether you need the meeting, the purpose of the meeting, the attendees, the agenda and the timing. Also make sure meetings are effective and well run.
If you are experiencing any of these in your day, what are you going to change?
