AI is dominating the news at the moment so in this article we look at whether soft skills are still important in the age of AI.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that empowers computers to learn, reason, and perform a variety of tasks in ways that used to require human intelligence, such as understanding language, analysing data and providing suggestions. AI techniques rely on data, algorithms and computational power. AI systems learn and improve through exposure to vast amounts of data and identify patterns and relationships.

The key benefits of AI include automating processes and workflows, reducing manual errors in data processing, analytics and other tasks, eliminating repetitive tasks to free people up to work on more complex problems, processing information and finding patterns and relationships quickly and cross checking results.

What are softs skills?

Soft skills are the personal qualities that help you thrive in life and at work. They are the behavioural and interpersonal skills that relate to how effectively you interact with others and handle everyday life and specific situations.
These are quite different to hard skills which refer to the specific knowledge and abilities that you need to perform your job effectively or to complete a task. 

Soft skills consist of a combination of people, social, and communication skills, character traits, attitudes and mindsets, as well as social and emotional characteristics. These include attributes and personality traits that help you interact with others and succeed in life and at work.

Examples of soft skills include all aspects of communication, being confident and assertive, decision making, problem solving, goal setting, planning and taking action, productivity and effectiveness, your thinking, resilience and anxiety and stress management.

Hard skills are those talents and abilities that can be measured. They are usually specific to a particular job, and they can be learned through schooling or on the job training.

Examples of hard skills include technical, computer, marketing, project management and analytical skills. If you are being more specific, computer skills may include areas such as Java Script, machine learning and data mining.

Are soft skills still important in the age of AI?

While AI offers significant benefits, it is crucial to use it as a tool to enhance, not replace, human interaction.

Soft skills are likely to be much more important in the age of AI, as this is where humans can still add value. Soft skills are not areas that AI can easily replace. This means that your learning and development needs to be focused on developing your soft skills, not just on the more technical side of your role. 

Soft skills can also help us in getting the best out of AI by using soft skills (such as curiosity, thinking, creativity, problem solving, flexibility) to interpret the output.

AI can process and even simulate emotions, but it does not have a conscious, self awareness or real feelings. AI cannot easily replace personality, judgement, thinking, empathy or curiosity. Human emotions are ever changing and subject to interpretation and the many facets of the human brain and behaviour are difficult to encode into AI.
