Conflict is a normal part of a relationship in life and work, if resolved in a healthy way with effective conflict management.

What is conflict?

Conflict is defined as a clash, disagreement or argument (which can be protracted and/or serious) between individuals or groups arising out of a difference in thought processes, attitudes, understanding, interests, requirements and perceptions.

Or put more simply, conflict is a disagreement or a difference of opinion between two or more people.

What are the characteristics of conflict?

Conflict may have the following characteristics, some of which are detrimental, while others are beneficial:

1. Conflict is usually a series of interconnected incidents, that evolve over time and stem from misunderstandings or misinterpretations of actions, words or intentions.

2. Conflict is an inherent aspect of human interaction between diverse individuals with unique perspectives, priorities, needs and aspirations.

3. Conflict is the opposite of cooperation, which includes collaboration, harmony and shared goals.

4. Conflict is a dynamic process that evolves and changes over time, intensifying or de-escalating, depending on the actions and responses of the involved parties.

5. Conflict may be between individuals or groups of people and is a natural part of life and an integral part of navigating relationships and achieving collective goals.

6. Conflict can result in a high level of emotion such as stress, anxiety, fear, anger, distrust, rejection, defensiveness, resentment and hopelessness.

7. Conflict can be disruptive and even destructive in life and at work.

8. Conflict can spark creativity and innovation, where differences can lead to fresh insights, alternative solutions and new approaches.

9. When conflict is managed constructively, it can serve as a catalyst for personal and organisational growth, challenging individuals and organisations to self reflect, resulting in increased self awareness and growth.

10. Conflict tests the strength of relationships and highlights the level of trust, respect and communication existing between parties.

What is conflict management and resolution?

Conflict management is the practise of being able to identify and manage conflicts sensibly, fairly and efficiently. It focuses on developing and implementing strategies to reduce conflict and is about de-escalating conflict and avoiding future escalations. Conflict management uses processes, tools, and skills to find creative and respectful ways to manage disagreements and disputes.

Conflict resolution is the agreement reached when all or most of the issues of contention are cleared up and concentrates on ending the conflict.
